Authorship and Contributorship

Who qualifies as an author, and how roles are credited.

Authorship gives credit and carries responsibility. The journal follows the authorship guidance of COPE and the criteria below, adapted from the ICMJE recommendations.

Who Qualifies as an Author

Every listed author must meet all four criteria:

  1. Made a substantial contribution to the conception or design of the work, or to the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data.
  2. Drafted the manuscript or revised it critically for important intellectual content.
  3. Approved the final version to be published.
  4. Agrees to be accountable for all aspects of the work and to ensure that questions about its accuracy or integrity are investigated and resolved.

People who contributed but do not meet all criteria, for example by providing funding, supervision alone, data collection alone, technical help, or language editing, are listed in the Acknowledgments with their permission.

Contributor Roles

Each article includes an author-contribution statement using the CRediT taxonomy (for example conceptualization, methodology, software, formal analysis, data curation, writing, supervision).

Corresponding Author

The corresponding author communicates with the journal on behalf of all co-authors, ensures that all of them have approved the submission and any revisions, and makes sure the declarations are complete and accurate.

Unacceptable Practices

  • Gift or honorary authorship (listing someone who did not contribute).
  • Ghost authorship (omitting someone who did contribute, including professional writers).
  • Buying or selling authorship, or adding authors in exchange for payment or favours.
  • Listing AI tools as authors (see Generative AI Policy).

Changes to Authorship

The author list and order should be final at submission. Any change before acceptance requires a written request signed by all authors, including any author being removed, that explains the reason. Changes after acceptance are allowed only in exceptional cases approved by the Editor-in-Chief. Authorship disputes are handled following COPE guidance; the journal does not adjudicate disputes but may contact the authors' institutions.
