Generative AI Policy

Rules for using AI tools in writing, reviewing, and editing.

Generative AI tools (for example large language models and image generators) can help with language and analysis, but they can also produce inaccurate, biased, or plagiarized content and can expose confidential material. This policy explains how authors, reviewers, and editors of the journal may use them.

For Authors

  • AI tools may be used to improve language and readability, and as research tools when their use is part of the method.
  • Any use beyond basic grammar and spelling correction must be disclosed in a Declaration of generative AI use before the references, naming the tool, version, and purpose. Use as a research tool is also described in the Method section.
  • Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of all content and must check every output, including references, which AI tools can invent.
  • AI tools cannot be listed as authors because they cannot take responsibility for the work, and they cannot be cited as sources.
  • AI-generated or AI-altered images, figures, or data are not permitted unless AI is the subject of the research and the process is described in the Method section.

For Reviewers

  • Do not upload manuscripts or any part of them to generative AI tools; this breaches confidentiality.
  • Do not use generative AI to write or evaluate review reports. Reviewers are accountable for their reports.

For Editors

  • Editors follow the same confidentiality rules as reviewers.
  • Tools used by the journal for screening, such as similarity checking or AI-text detection, are always interpreted by an editor; a detection score alone never decides the outcome of a manuscript.
