Focus and Scope

The research we publish, and what falls outside it.

SEIN publishes research in applied science and information technology that makes a clear contribution beyond routine application: a new method or model, a substantial improvement over published work, a careful empirical comparison, or a systematic review that synthesizes a field. Studies based on data from one country or organization are welcome when they explain what other readers can learn from them.

Areas Covered

Article Types

TypeDescription
Original research articleReports new results with a complete method and discussion. Typically 5,000–8,000 words including references, with at least 25 references.
Systematic reviewSynthesizes the literature on a defined question using a documented protocol (for example PRISMA 2020), with the search strategy, inclusion criteria, and quality assessment. Typically at least 50 references. Narrative reviews are considered only by invitation.

What Makes a Strong Submission

  • A clearly stated research question or problem and why it matters.
  • An explicit gap in recent literature that the article fills.
  • Methods described in enough detail to be reproduced or audited.
  • Results compared with prior studies, with honest limitations.
  • Implications for research and practice that reach beyond the local setting.

Out of Scope

The following are returned without review:

  • Information systems built for a single organization without evaluation or generalizable findings.
  • Pure theoretical computer science with no application (please consider our sister journal IRIS).
  • Pure natural-science studies in which information technology plays no role.
  • Manuscripts that duplicate work already published, including the authors' own theses published elsewhere without substantial new contribution.
